Interview with Marco Kehren /Deinonychus.
1. Hails, Marco!!! How are things? What's your purpose with Deinonychus? Individual realization?
Hello there, I'm fine thanks! I'm just finishing the songwriting for the forthcoming album. My purpose with Deinonychus?......To express my emotions through musical art, and share that with the listener who wants to hear it. Deinonychus is sort of my emotional diary of life, conducted onto paper( reffering to the lyrics), guided by the musical surroundings. All in all I would categorise this all as a complex form of art.
2. Please, introduce us in the world of Deinonychus. How the band was formed, discography...
The band was formed in Autumn 1992 as a one-man band, I released a rehearsal not earlier than May 1993, and in late 1993 the only demo simply called "Promo 1993". Eversince I runned Deinonychus as a one-man band for seven years until I got a drummer in the band, by the name of William Sarginson from the Uk, and a year later a keyboarder by the name of Arkdae from France. Unfortunately both of them had to leave the band just a couple of months ago, as they were too busy with their own bands, and I had to form a new line up! By now I have a new drummer from Germany which's name is Steve wolz, and a Swedish guitarplayer Andreas Casado. A Keyboardplayer from italy also might join the band, but we've to audition him first!

3. How do you see Deinonychus in 1992 and today? The band has obviously changed over the years, the sound direction, musical style, line-up... Does Deinonychus feel comfortable with the way Deinonychus is now?
Today Deinonychus is way more mature, as I am as well! You know, I think that I recorded my first two albums way too early, back than I had no experience and was less skilled as a musician. Today the sounds and music of Deinonychus does represent what I am, and where I stand. "Mournument" the last album which was actually recorded in 2000, does still take me by surprise as sounding fresh in my ears! Though the new stuff will go a step further than that, and is way heavier in terms of darkness and somberness……. Frankly seen, Deinonychus is still a "one-man band"as I still compose all myself, but with the help of a decent line up, I can express it all better. I simply have more time now to concentrate on my vocals and just the guitars and bass. And we hope to play live in the future with this new line up.
4. You've recently released new album, "Mournument". This release was delayed for two years, so, after this delay, are you still satisfied with the final result (production and mix)?
Yes, I still like it very much!!!!!!! This album was sort of a step ahead of me, as by now, it took me a very long time to come up with new songs which are equally good as the last album. I really took a break of 2 years, and hadn't started songwriting until last year. ( mournument was written in 1999/2000)
5. How are the divulgation and reception of your CD? How "Mournument" is being received worldwide? Are you having a good response?
From what I've seen and heard sofar, it has been positivly accepted for at least 90% worldwide, thus very good if you ask me, that for an album which is so complex in terms of extremity and insanity! Yeah "Mournument" is doing well…. I'm satisfied. |

6. How did its sound evolve as compared with past releases? What do you wish the listener to feel, to experience when listening to the music of Deinonychus?
Naturally! I don't create a concept in order to compose songs in a certain style or manner, it just happens. I only write songs when I'm in very good shape though. The musical development certainly also is affected by the kind of musical influences I gain, from all sorts of genres. But this doesn't mean that I copy styles or whatsoever. When someone listens to Deinonychus, I simply want him or her to identify themselves with it, and feel good about what they hear. Though the music sounds quite depressing, I hope it makes people stronger, and think a bit more about themselves.
7. "Mournument" line-up features you (Marco), William Sarginson and a new member, Arkdae, the new keyboard player. How this new line-up influenced Deinonychus and on the new album? How was your relation with the new member in studio?
Well, like I said earlier, William and Arkdae had to leave the band, as they're too busy with their own bands. Nevertheless, both of them surely did have influence on the last album, as I gave both the freedom to put their own styles into Deinonychus, without go ff the typical Deinonychus-pattern, and they succeeded!!!!! My relation to the members was surely good! William is a long term friend of mine, which I visit in the UK from time to times. Arkdae is a good friend as well, but we have almost no contact.
8. What's the lyrical concept around this album? What about 'Tantalised in this Labyrinth'?
Punishment for being reborn again!!!!!!!! "Tantalised in this labyrinth" is about being deceived by a higher deity who promised you a better life after dead, but all you got was damnation!
9. What do you want to express or pass in your songs? Is there any particular message the band is trying to get across?
Emotions of all kind, that even with all the misery which can surround you, life is a gift, more beautiful than anything else. Sounds quite odd out of my mouth eh? But it's true. People should read between the lines, and shouldn't take Deinonychus more seriously as it is for me!!!!!!!!
10. What more inspire you in the lyrics-writing process? Any personal experiences?
My daily emotions, personal experiences as well ofcourse. However, I capture all this in a way too complex form to call it personal, as the lyrics are full of metaphors and symbolism, and can't be read as obviously looking stories of any kind. Well hard to explain actually, guess people should figure out themselves what I want to express with them, maybe they find something of themselves back in the lyrics, now than……. I would find real acknowledgement in what I'm doing with Deinonychus!
11. What meaning do you find in "Mournument" cover art? How much of a connection do you feel it has to your lyrics?
I shot the picture myself, and basically it represents nothing, it just reflects a somber emotion, when staring at it. As you can see, it's a window with bars in front. It is lyrically connected thru it's visual expression, by looking dark, and hopeless, I think.
12. Now, some personal questions... How do you spend your spare time? Hobbies, interests?
I Like apart from music, travelling, reading, socialising, I do much of sports as well, to keep in shape, ballancing my fysical and mental condition! You know, Deinonychus might reflect an extreme image upon me, but I'm not that different from the ordinary, just that I'm quite philosophic in nature, and therefore have the need to express that, in my musical art! Apart from that I work in prison! (no kidding).
13. What book are you reading now? Do you read much? What books impress you most of all?
Nowadays I read almost nothing, due my social activities. Last book I read was "Memnoch the devil"by Anne Rice. Most impressing book I read was the biographical story of a drug-addicted girl called Christiane F. from Germany, it really went down my spine! Furhteron books by John Milton, Charles Beaudelaire, Anne Rice as well. And Tolkien. I fancy a bit of everything, you know…. Phylosophic reading, beautiful stories, reality readings, books with a scientific nature, religious, and mythological books.
14. Tell me one person of the past that you respect and why?
Very hard question, I rather want to answer this in a general manner. I respect those who are open-minded, not ignorant, and tolerant to others, and patience. All aspects we all lose from time to time, but if everybody would understand that, we would be aware of that, and thus respect eachother more.
15. Can be suicide a solution? Do you believe in live after death?
I really don't want to encourage people to commit suicide by saying that it can be a solution. I find this a hard question. I know that I have comitted myself lots with this thematic, just to understand it all better. But what can I say….. I respect those who do it, but can't say if it's the right way, but I can surely UNDERSTAND why people go that far!!!!! Yes!!!!! I do believe in life after death, no matter in what form or shape! I simply believe that.
16. Melancholy is the main factor in Deinonychus. Can be sadness a kind of punishment? Or pleasure?
Sadness surely can feel like a punishment, but that's how ones definition of sadness is! Sadness surely isn't about pleasure at all. I myself want to understand why I can be sad, and how it comes, and how to deal with it. And how it affects my life as a whole. Sadness is something we can learn from, as it generates from emotional experiences one endures in life. To confront yourself with sadness (as I do with Deinonychus), in many cases gives you back the opposite emotion, by understanding it, and learn from it, or control it, in a healthy manner ofcourse. It might make you stronger, and shapes your character in a positive way!!!!
17. Which movie could you imagine Deinonychus music being a soundtrack for?
Hard to say, I guess the music is too extreme for a soundtrack. I really don't know!?!?!? |
 |
18. About tour stuff, finally Deinonychus is ready for live experiences, how are your expectations?
Uhm, we've laid those plans on ice for a while, as I completely changed the line up, and that we've decided to record a new album first with the new line up, in order to build a well-playing team. I hope that everything works out this time, as by then, we surely can take the step, and play live sometimes. It has been said often in the past, but it never happened, so I think, I better don't speculate about any future plans regarding playing live. We'll see. Though there's interest enough in Europe for example.
19. Plans to the future?
In August and september we will record our 6th full-length album called "INSOMNIA"… again for My Kingdom Music from Italy. For this album we will go to Italy, and record it in a studio in Rome!!!! Will be quite a new experience!!!!! The new album also will contain a bonus video-clip, which we've made in Germany in May, for the song "Ascension-the 40th day after easter"from the "Mournument" album. The new album will be very dark again, and slow!!! I guess it won't be released this year anymore, but in early 2004! Don't know for sure. Well, anything more for the future?????? Can't tell now.
