Interview with Fabiano Penna /Rebaelliun.
01. Heil, Fabiano. Can you give us a brief history of Rebaelliun?
Rebaelliun started in March '98. During 6 months band stayed in Brazil
rehearsing and writing music, to record our first stuff in November, "Promo-Tape '98". A couple of weeks later the whole line-up went to Europe, we wanted
to play some gigs and look for a good record deal. During 3 months Rebaelliun played 19 gigs in Belgium, Holland and Germany, a good response from the
European extreme Metal fans and the record deal with Hammerheart made our stay there a success. A few months later we recorded in Brazil our first
album, "Burn the Promised Land", which was released in Europe in November '99. A new tour was arranged, so from January to March '2000 we played
17 more gigs in European territory, beside bands like Limbonic Art and Ancient. Back to Brazil, Ronaldo Lima (guitars) left band. Like a trio
we recorded a new Mini-CD, called "Bringer of War". To promote this new stuff we returned to tour Europe between June/July, 27 gigs beside Vader
and Vital Remains over 15 European countries promoting "Bringer of War". After this tour Marcello Marzari (bass/vocals) left Rebaelliun. Right now
we are looking for the new members and writing new stuff, which will be recorded on next March in Germany.
02. What are your thoughts on "Bringer of War"? What do you feel it has done for your band?
"Bringer of War" shows fast, extreme and technical Death Metal. It
was the first stuff we recorded like a trio, we wrote most of the parts
in a couple of weeks, however the results are quite OK, this Mini-album
sounds powerful and shows the potential of the band. On last tour a lot
of people showed interest on this stuff, so I think it has helped a lot
to spread our music within the underground scene.
03. Are you satisfied with the final result (production and mix) of "Bringer of War"? Who is responsible for the production of the album?
It's only a Mini-album, as I said before we wrote most of the parts
in 2 weeks, Ronaldo had left band a few weeks before the recordings, so
you can imagine all the problems we had to record this stuff. We recorded
in a friend's studio here in Brazil, we had 1 week to record the tracks,
but we got a good sound, not so clear but very powerful and extreme. We
produced the album regarding the sound by ourselves, Hammerheart cared
about the artcover and layouts.
04. How are the divulgation and reception of your CD?
Good for a Mini-album. "Bringer of War" had a good promotion while
we were touring Europe, I read some good reviews and so we are satisfied.
Our goal now is the second album, we are already working on this album
and we are very happy with the new tracks and all the conception we are
creating for it. |

05. What elements are going to be different for
this release as compared to the older material? The lyrical themes in particular, are they different from those covered on previous albums?
"Bringer of War" is more skilled than "Burn the Promised Land". Drums
sound is much better, the vocals are really scornful, and guitar sound
is also OK. About lyrics, we keep writing about the strong ones ruling
the weak ones, this is the eternal war in ourlife.
06. What is your source of inspiration when you create your music, and lyrics? Outside of music, what inspires you in life?
Rebaelliun is the inspiration. We have dedicated a lot of time for
this band, Rebaelliun is not only some musicians playing Death Metal, this
band is our lifestyle. We have a deep wrath against mankind, this feeling makes our music strong and extreme, as well asthe lyrics.
07. How was "Bringer of War European tour"? Any peculiar stories you'd like to share with us, from some tour?
This last tour in Europe was huge: 27 shows in 30 days. We travelled
a lot, we played a lot, and in some countries like Poland, Belarus, Portugal and Spain the response was really incredible.
08. How are your shows? And your performance on stage?
We try to perform the music on the most extreme way we can. It doesn't
make sense bands playing fast music but too concentrate on the instruments...
of course you have to avoid the mistakes, but audience is not interested
in how difficult is the music, they wanna feel the energy of the musicians
playing. And I'm sure that on most of the gigs we've been able to show a good performance while playing fast and skilled Death Metal.
09. How has your touring situation been? What are your plans to tour in the future?
Hammerheart has booked all the tours in Europe, we had some problems
regarding VISA in the first tour we played this year, but last tour was
quite OK. We plan a Brazilian Tour on next year, we wanna play in the main
cities of this big country as soon as possible... and after the release
of the new album we will probably play a new European Tour, but it's still too early to talk about this.
10. Rebaelliun have a great furious performance on stage. Does Rebaelliun have any plans to release alive album?
Not now, maybe in a few years. You have to play perfectly to record
a good live album, and besides this you need a good structure to produce a good livealbum.
11. Talking about sales, how was "Burn the Promised Land" done for you?
"Burn the Promised Land" sold very well in Europe. A few months ago
it was released in Brazil and I've heard the response has been OK as well.
And there are some plans to release this album in North America on next year. Rebaelliun is a new band, "Burn the Promised Land" was our debut-album
and nowadays any Death Metal fan all over the world knows the name Rebaelliun. I'm sure we have got a good response fromour releases.
12. I'll tell you words/ names and you'll give
me your thoughts about it... OK ?
Gaucho culture - probably one of the most rich cultures all over the world.
Patos lake - I've never been there.
Getúlio Vargas - what can I say about a dictator? I believe in freedom.
Farrapos War - it showed how rebellion can work out if the beliefs are strong enough.
Brazilian actual politic, economic and social situation - it's a big shame and it will not change so soon. I will
not depend on a fucking corrupt and unscrupulous government to have a decent life, I'm trying to change things by myself.

13. Explain the differences and similarities between Rebaelliun and Blessed, your old band.
Blessed quit in 96. After two years I, Ronaldo Lima and Sandro Moreira
(drums) started Rebaelliun. We called our ex-bass/vocals but he was not interested, so we invited
Marcello. I can say that Rebaelliun has a stronger own style, but I have to admit that it was developed while
playing in Blessed. The old band doesn't exist anymore, but it helped us
a lot regarding writing music for instance.
14. Who are some of your fave bands on the scene right now and who are the best newcomers?
Best Death Metal bands in my opinion: Morbid Angel (gods), Krisiun,
Angelcorpse (RIP), Hate Eternal, Centurian, Deicide. About new bands, I've
listened to fabulous Brazilian bands like Abhorrence, Nephast, Ophiolatry
and Mental Horror, as well as Diabolic (USA) and many others. |
15. What three books and or movies would you consider essential?
Right now I just remember some good movies: "Conan, the Barbarian",
"Braveheart", "Bran Stoker's Dracula", "Gladiator". I've also read some
good books like "Controlled Burn" by Pete Helmkamp (ex-Angelcorpse).
16. To conclude, if there's anything in particular
you'd like to say about the album or your band, then you're welcome to do that now. Thanks for this interview .... Your final bullets...
Thanks for the support. To the fans: wait for the new album, it will
be recorded between February/ March in Germany and must be released a couple
of months after the recordings. It will sound faster and more extreme than
previous releases, and some tours will follow, again in Europe, finally
in Brazil, and maybe in North America. We hope to meet all our friends
on the road. For more info, www.rebaelliun.com . Stay rebel!!
